About Kohala Manor

Kohala Manor is a family business born from a love of history, nature and hospitality. Over the years we have renovated the manor with care, bringing back its dignity while keeping the peace and charm of old times.

We are surrounded by a manor park where birdsong, wildlife and greenery create a special atmosphere. We believe every guest deserves personal attention and a warm welcome.

History

Kohala Manor (German: Tolks) lies in the historic Rakvere parish of Virumaa. It was first mentioned in 1489, when it belonged to the von Wrangell family. Later owners included the von Lode, von Tiesenhausen, von Ungern-Sternberg and von Hastfer families. In 1801 the manor returned to the von Wrangells; the last owner before the 1919 expropriation was Sergei von Wrangell.

The wooden historicist main house was completed in the early 1880s to a design by architect Friedrich Modi. Originally the centre was single-storey with two-storey wings; in the 1920s and 1930s, when the building housed a school, it was raised to two full storeys.

Today the main house and its surroundings have been restored and the manor welcomes guests again.
